University Chaplain Tom Macfie has announced that Dr. Geoffrey Ward from Memphis, Tennessee, will become the organist and choirmaster of All Saints’ Chapel. Ward was selected from a highly competitive pool of distinguished candidates from this country and abroad, and received unanimous support from the search advisory committee. He will officially begin his duties on July 1.
Ward currently serves both as the director of music-organist and choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Memphis, and as the artistic director for the Memphis Boychoir/Memphis Girlchoir/Memphis Chamber Choir, an outreach ministry of St. John’s. He is also an adjunct professor of music at both the University of Memphis and the Memphis Theological Seminary. Educated in both Canada and the United States, he received a doctorate of music arts in church music, with an emphasis in organ performance, from the University of Kansas.
Ward is no stranger to Sewanee; this spring marked the 10th anniversary of the Memphis Boychoir/Memphis Girlchoir singing with the University Choir in All Saints’ Chapel during a Sunday celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
“Geoff’s familiarity with the university, his boundless energy, and his collegial approach will serve him well as he builds on the foundations established by Robbe Delcamp, who has served in this role for nearly four decades,” said Macfie.
Ward is married to Hilary Dow Ward, a distinguished educator and musician in her own right.
