The Rev. Tom Macfie, university chaplain, has announced the appointment of the Rev. Dr. Melissa Hartley to the position of Associate University Chaplain at the university. Hartley is a 1993 graduate of the College, where she was a religion major and a member of the university choir. She will begin her new duties in Sewanee in June.

The University of the South's 2011-12 academic year came to a close May 11, 12, and 13 with three ceremonies marking graduation weekend on the Mountain. Commencement and Baccalaureate ceremonies were held for close to 400 students from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Letters, and The School of Theology. Three honorary degrees were presented during The School of Theology Commencement, and two during the Baccalaureate ceremony.

The Sewanee Volunteer Fire Department and Sewanee Emergency Medical Services recently held tryouts for students interested in making this commitment to the community. Five first-years students were accepted as EMTs (Sydney Phillpot, Nate Foster, Andy Streiff, Nakeirah Christie, and Seth Burns), and five more joined the ranks of firefighters (Thomas Walters, Rory Devine, Penn Jenks, Sloan Taylor, and Ben Yunker). Congratulations&#8212;and thank you&#8212;to these students for becoming a part of a long Sewanee tradition.

Sixteen Sewanee seniors and six juniors were initiated into Phi Beta Kappa Monday, April 9, joining the seven members of the class of 2012 who were initiated last year as juniors. Election to Phi Beta Kappa is perhaps the most prized honor a college student can receive. Students who have demonstrated exceptional academic excellence become eligible for election after completing at least five consecutive semesters.
