Sewanee Summer Music Festival event: Béla Fleck documentary

  • on 16 Jul 2014
  • Sewanee Union Theatre

Ahead of Fleck's performance later in the week, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival will screen the documentary “Béla Fleck: How to Write a Banjo Concerto,” at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16. Fleck will make some remarks before the screening. Tickets are $7. (Use the pass-phrase "Week of Banjo" for $5 community tickets!)

“Béla Fleck: How To Write A Banjo Concerto” follows banjo trailblazer Béla Fleck through one of his most challenging musical journeys so far, into the world of the symphony orchestra. Fleck is commissioned to compose a major banjo concerto, possibly the first of its kind, for banjo and 80-piece symphony orchestra. It begins before he has written a note, and concludes a year later with the sold-out premiere concert with the Nashville Symphony. A very intimate look at the process of composition and collaboration, “How to Write a Banjo Concerto” features Earl Scruggs, Chick Corea, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Zakir Hussain, Abigail Washburn, and more of Fleck’s close musical friends.

The Sewanee Summer Music Festival (SSMF) is an internationally acclaimed festival combining a month-long program for advanced music students and a professional concert series. Each summer, more than 150 aspiring young musicians from around the U.S. and abroad join with teachers, performers, and internationally recognized guest artists to create a musical community in Sewanee.

On the Faculty Artist Series lineup this summer is Copland’s Appalachian Spring, favorites by Dvorak, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and more. The annual Hike to a Concert is a unique performance held in the breathtaking natural surroundings on Sewanee’s mountaintop campus.

Regular weekly concerts include student concerts, the Faculty Artist Series on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoon performances by the Cumberland Orchestra and the Sewanee Symphony.
