"Jazz as Spoken Word" will feature jazz-poet Elliot Bratton and the Sewanee Jazz Quartet.
Jazz-poet and performance artist Elliot Bratton will travel from Maryland to Sewanee to share his poetry and the art of "spoken jazz." He will perform with support from the Sewanee Jazz Quartet, who will perform tunes by Duke Ellington, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk.
Elliot is the author of "Jazz Son" and has written more than 300 poems and songs and two dozen works of fiction and non-fiction. His poetry and scholarly writings on jazz have appeared in The Crisis, CODA, Quarto, Cadence and other publications. For many years, Bratton hosted "Wednesday out to Lunch," a weekly program on New York City's renowned jazz station WKCR-FM, where he sometimes read his poetry.
All are invited to enjoy a great evening of jazz and poetry. The Ayres Multicultural Center is the sponsor of this event; for more information please call 598.1241.
