Sewanee professor Deb McGrath and students are working toward a potential solution to the twin problems of poverty and deforestation in Haiti: payment for ecosystem services. They are working with Zanmi Agrikol (Haitian Creole for “Partners in Agriculture,” a sister organization to Paul Farmer’s Partners in Health), using agroforestry to produce both coffee for export and carbon offsets. A video slideshow documents their progress.

Journalist David Brooks and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham, C’91, entertained a packed Guerry Auditorium with a Friday afternoon discussion of power and politics. Brooks was on campus as the university’s Baccalaureate speaker, and received a standing ovation from students and their families following his Saturday morning address in All Saints’ Chapel.

The University of the South's 2012-13 academic year comes to a close May 10, 11 and 12 with three ceremonies marking graduation weekend on the Mountain. Commencement and Baccalaureate ceremonies will be held for students from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Letters, and The School of Theology. If you can't be on the Mountain for the events, you can watch Commencement online at 10 a.m. (Central) Sunday morning.

Neuroscientist Rebecca Burwell of Brown University gave the keynote address, followed by almost 100 student presentations. A team of faculty judges recognized the most outstanding presentations as McCrady Prize winners.

Last summer’s Western Geology class met last week at the Potter house to share photos of their three-week trip to the Grand Canyon, southern Utah, and other parts of the Colorado Plateau. The trip began in 1983 and runs every two summers. Four hundred Sewanee students have participated in the 15 trips.

A 120-foot-deep research well was recently drilled behind Rebel’s Rest as part of an ongoing groundwater study involving geology professors Steve Shaver, Martin Knoll, and Bran Potter and students from the Department of Forestry and Geology. More than 100 students are enrolled in six watershed science courses this semester.

Sewanee students defeated undergrads from the University of Kentucky and University of Tennessee last week in a forestry/natural resources quiz bowl. The competition is an annual event between the three schools during a regional forestry meeting. The quiz bowl includes questions about plants, wildlife, policy, forest management and other topics.

Sewanee faculty members have received seven awards from the Associated Colleges of the South Faculty Advancement Program. The awards will support an interdisciplinary team led by Celeste Ray to examine the role of springs in the settlement of the Cumberland Plateau; a payment for ecosystem services project in Haiti led by Deborah McGrath; the development of an online portal to accompany Helen Bateman’s ongoing Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds program; a multi-campus research and teaching program in math led by Matthew Rudd; a digital platform for cross-campus pedagogical innovations led by Nathan Stogdill; and two projects complementing the ACS Teaching and Learning Workshop, both involving Betsy Sandlin.

Visiting Assistant Professor of History Taylor Spence has been awarded two research fellowships. The awards, funded by the McColl Research Program in the American Geographical Society Library, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries, and the Filson Historical Society, will both support Spence's book project, "The Endless Commons: Contested Borders, Land-Right Cultures, and the Origins of American Expansion, 1783-1848."
